Current Study: Genetics and Reading
The Genetics and Reading Study
As a member of the Registry, we would like to invite you to participate in a new study called the Genetics and Reading Study. We know that reading problems can run in families. We want to learn if families carry genes that make it hard to learn to read and are passed on from one generation to the next.
Your family may qualify for this study. In order to qualify, a family must have:- 1) A child with reading problems; and
- 2) Any blood relatives who are willing to participate. Relatives can be birth parents (biological mother and/or father) or other blood relatives such as brothers, sisters, half-siblings, or grandparents. Relatives at any reading level can participate.
Genes and Reading Ability
This is a study of the relationship between genes and reading skills. We will study genes by collecting samples of saliva (spit). Saliva contains DNA and genes that get passed down from our relatives. It can help us tell if reading problems are inherited. We will also review your children’s reading test records to find out about their reading skills. Some children will be given additional reading tests so we can better understand their reading level. We will arrange to give any additional reading tests either in person or by telephone.
How to Apply
You can apply for this study by filling out the Application pages and consent forms for each person who will participate. Please email us at read@psy.fsu.edu or call us toll-free at (866)290-2456 if you would like an application for this study.
